Research Interests

The Nano Opto-Electronics Laboratory (NOEL), Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Semiconductor Lasers, at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHKSZ) was established in 2015 when Prof. Zhaoyu ZHANG moved from Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School to CUHKSZ. We are a group of people who are dedicated to the dream of improving the quality of lifes with our expertise in nano photonics. We built our labs from scatch, we create our culture from nothing, and we attract talented people from everywhere. Understanding that the impact our work may have been mainly from our persistence in the right way and the wisdom from the hardship, we commit to the dream, and we try to deliver more! 

Vision: To change people's lives through (photoelectric) wisdom. 

Mission: Optoelectronic science and technology that can be implemented in 5-10 years.

Focusing on the three levels of theoretical research-device research-application, conduct research in semiconductor optoelectronic material design and semiconductor laser fabrication and testing, forming a semiconductor laser research and development chain from materials to devices to samples. At the same time, it cultivates the optical chip talents needed by the industry.

And we are working mainly in the following 3 areas: 

1. Ultrasmall semiconductor laser devices (Inorganic group) 

2. Optimization of nanophotonic structures using artificial intelligence (AI group) 

3. Organic optoelectronic devices (Organic group)  

Biography

Professor Zhaoyu Zhang, the director and principle investigator of the laboratory, graduated from the Department of Electronic Engineering at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and worked as a postdoc at the Lawrence National Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley. He achieved: 1. The smallest disk-shaped semiconductor laser at that time; 2. The first red photonic crystal laser; 3. The first microfluidic dye laser. Since returning to China in 2011, he has been conducting basic research and technological development on the design, fabrication and testing of lasers on different material systems, including: the first continuous light pumped GaAsBi disc laser, the first silicon-based three-five disc and photonics Crystal lasers, etc.
