Bio Sketch
Dr. Claude Phipps
Claude Phipps earned B.S. and M.S. degrees at MIT, and a Ph.D. in plasma physics at Stanford University in 1972. He formed Photonic Associates, LLC (PALLC) in 1995. He originated the "ORION" and “L’ADROIT” concepts for laser space debris re-entry, and the laser plasma thruster, and has chaired the High Power Laser Ablation conference in Santa Fe since 1998. He has published several technical books:
C. R. Phipps and R. W. Dreyfus, "Laser ablation and plasma formation" in Laser Ionization Mass Analysis, Akos Vertes, Renaat Gijbels and Fred Adams, eds., Chemical Physics Monographs 124, pp. 369-441 (1993)
C. Phipps , ed., Laser Ablation and its Applications, Springer Series in Optical Sciences, 129, Springer, New York (2007), pp. 407-434
C. Phipps, with Friedelwolf Wicke (Illustrator), No Wonder You Wonder! Great Inventions and Scientific Mysteries, Springer International Publishing, Cham (2016)
C. Phipps, “Laser ablation propulsion and its applications in space,” in Advances in the Applications of Lasers in Materials Science, P. Ossi, ed., Springer Series in Materials Science 274, Springer Nature, Switzerland (2018) pp. 217-246
He has also published three general interest books: No Wonder you Wonder (Springer), When Scientists were Gods (Newman Springs) and An American Family (Page Publishing).
