Research Interests

Dr. Simaan’s research interests are highly interdisciplinary and cover a broad spectrum of theoretical and applied topics in engineering (electrical, mechanical, materials, and biomedical) and science (economics, geophysics, and computer science).  In the past 50 years or so, he has worked on a wide range of research projects in geophysical signal processing. wave propagation, electromagnetics, optimization and decision-making, and control systems.   His research has been funded mostly by NSF, DARPA, AFOSR, ONR, NIH, and a variety of industrial sources including GULF Oil, ALCOA, and WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC. He has published extensively in all research areas he was involved in. Among his publications are 5 books (of which 4 are edited/co-edited), 60 co-edited journal issues, 145 archival journal papers and book chapters, 240 papers in conference proceedings, and 24 industry technical reports.   His archival papers appeared in 56 different journals including 18 different IEEE Transactions and Journals.

Marwan A. Simaan joined the University of Central Florida in 2008 as the Florida 21st Century Chair and Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.  He served as Dean of the College of Engineering until July 1, 2012. Prior to joining the University of Central Florida, he was the Bell of PA/Bell Atlantic Professor and Chairman of the ECE Department at the University of Pittsburgh.  He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE-Class of 2000), a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE-elected 1988), a Life Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE-elected 2005), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS-elected 1999), a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE-elected 2014), a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI-elected 2014), a Fellow of the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA -2022), and a Fellow of the Electromagnetics Academy (EMA-elected 1990).  He is also an Honorary Member of Phi Eta Sigma, the National Freshmen Honor Society.  Dr. Simaan received all his degrees in Electrical Engineering starting with a BS with Honors and Distinction in 1968 from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, an MSc in 1970 from the University of Pittsburgh, and a PhD in 1972 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Simaan is a registered Professional Engineer (PEE) in Pennsylvania.
