PIERS2019 Rome Focus/Special Sessions
SC3: Photonic Sensing in Health Science and Environmental Monitoring
Organized by Prof. Luigi Zeni (University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli") and Prof. Andrea Cusano (University of Sannio)
Session's Information:
Photonic sensors have evolved rapidly since their introduction. The first optical sensor was described by Bergman in 1968 to detect oxygen based on fluorescence quenching. Since then a multitude of photonic sensors has been realized combining multidisciplinary research in biology, chemistry, physics, electronics and optics. Theaim of thissession is to highlight and overview new and main trends in the development of advanced photonic sensors with applications in health and environmental monitoring. These include contributes focused on the development of novel photonic sensing platforms and systems based on different configurations, principles of operation and materials. Papers covering aspects related to new designs, manufacturing strategies, read-out approaches, functional materials, measurement methods and signal processing techniques are highly solicited. Applications may cover highly differentiated sectors, such as biological and chemical sensing, diagnostic devices used for biomedical and environmental monitoring, process analytical technologies used in the pharma, food and beverage industries.
