PIERS2016 Shanghai Focus/Special Sessions
3_FocusSession.SC3: Advances in Optical Communication and Networking
Organized by Dr. Jiajia Chen (KTH Royal Institute of Technology) and Dr. Lilin Yi (Shanghai Jiao Tong University)
Session's Information:
Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium (PIERS) provides an international forum for reporting progress and recent advances in all aspects of electromagnetics. Spectra range from statics to radio frequency, microwave, photonics, and beyond. It has been widely recognized that photonic communications technologies can provide costand energy-efficient transport solutions to deliver ultra-high bandwidth to the Internet users. In addition, new applications require networks with predictable and flexible characteristics and behavior. The inability of the current Internet infrastructure to cope with the wide variety and the rapidly growing number of users, emerging network applications and traffic patterns is leading to the need for new network models, architectures and protocols to meet the requirements of the Network of the Future. The focus session will address the challenges and recent advances in optical communication and networking. The scope of the session includes but is not limited to the following topics:

* Elastic/flex-grid optical networks
* Optical network survivability and security
* Novel optical access, metro and backbone network architectures and protocols
* Converged optical and wireless networks
* Optical networking for data center applications
* Backhaul/Fronthaul supporting 5G
* Software defined networking for optical networks
* Virtualization for optical networks and network functions
* Energy-efficient networks and sustainability
* Novel optical switching architecture
* Techno-economic analysis
* Standards
