PIERS2016 Shanghai Focus/Special Sessions
SC3&2: Controlling Optical Nonlinearity with Metamaterials
Organized by Prof. Shuang Zhang (University of Birmingham) and Prof. Yongmin Liu (Northeastern University)
Session's Information:
The strong local field enhancement arising from plasmonic resonance has enabled substantial progress of nonlinear optics over the past decades. Optical metamaterials, on the other hand, opens up an entirely new paradigm to design giant, ultrafast, efficient, and broadband nonlinear response starting from the level of individual meta-atoms. The emerging field of metasurfaces also provides an exceptional route to control the phase matching condition that is critically important in the nonlinear optical process. This session will focus on the fundamental science, potential limitations, and promising applications of nonlinear optical metamaterials and metasurfaces.
List of invited speakers (in alphabetical order): Prof. Pai-Yen Chen (Wayne State University), Prof. Tiejun Cui (Southeast University, China), Prof. Harald Giessen (University of Stuttgart, Germany), Prof. Jongwon Lee (Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, Republic of Korea), Prof. Natalia Litchinitser (State University of New York at Buffalo, USA), Dr. Rupert Oulton (Imperial College London), Prof. Nicolae Panoiu (University College London, UK), Prof. Jung-Tsung Shen (Washington University in St. Louis), Prof. Ventsi Valev (University of Bath, UK), Prof. Xiang Zhang (University of California at Berkeley, USA)
