3_FocusSession.SC3: Nonlinear Fiber Effects for Sensing and Signal Processing

Session's Information:
A nonlinear effect in optical fibers has been extensively studied for many decades. Frequency change of lightwave due to the nonlinear optical effect is very destructive for modern ultrahigh-speed optical communication systems because the propagating signal suffers from great distortion of the phase and frequency/wavelength. This effect has, however, found great potential applications to fiber-based sensing and signal processing. For instance, the variation of temperature, pressure, strain, etc. in an optical fiber leads to the change of the nonlinear optical effect, providing an informative sensing tool. Besides, this effect can be very helpful in processing large-bandwidth analog/digital signal so as to overcome the bottleneck of electronic devices/equipments. This session will focus on profound study (theory, simulation, and experiment) related to the nonlinear effect in regular/specialty optical fibers, sensing applications of the nonlinear effect in optical fibers, and photonic signal processing techniques based on the nonlinear optical effect.
