PIERS2019 Xiamen Focus/Special Sessions  
SC1&SC3&SC5: New Synergies among Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Photonics and Electromagnetics: From Data Processing to Hardware Implementations

Session's Information:
This Session aims at fostering scientific exchanges among researchers working in photonics, electromagnetics as well as in remote sensing problems, where the use of machine learning and artifical intelligence tools can lead to innovative solutions and/or to more efficient applications. In this context, data mining, signal processing and data-driven modeling techniques can rely on theoretical foundations of computational intelligence (i.e., neural networks, fuzzy logic, evolutionary computation, deep learning, etc.). Nonetheless, such techniques can be adopted in practical applications where the problems to be solved pertain to pattern recognition, data regression and classification, time series prediction, inverse modeling, multi-spectral image and data processing, sensor networks, smart grids, power delivery and control, electromagnetic interference, photonics, characterization of structures and materials, and so forth. Finally, synergies are possible also in the opposite direction, considering contributions of photonics and electromagnetics in the hardware realization of recurrent and deep neural networks as well as to implement quantum devices and quantum gate arrays. A Keynote Speaker of this Focus Session will be prof. Xudong Chen from the National University of Singapore (https://www.ece.nus.edu.sg/stfpage/elechenx/). All researchers interested in the said topics are advised to take part in this session.
